Food for the Soul

In Kershaw County, thousands wake up hungry in the morning and go to bed hungry at night. That number is growing, too, as more people lose their jobs, are forced out of their homes, or face tough, often painful decisions – like whether to pay the power bill or put food on the table. But let us not forget: These are our neighbors, and they need our help, and they need it now more than ever. By supporting Food for the Soul, we can provide the resources necessary to ensure that no one, at no time, ever goes hungry in our community.

Food for the Soul serves free, home cooked meals four days a week to anyone in need. In 2013 Food for the Soul served a total of 13,737 meals to a daily average of 67 people. The actual cost to prepare a single meal is $1.50. That affordable price is due to generous gifts-in-kind of canned goods, non-perishables and supplies, and the good work of staff and volunteers.

They operate as an emergency shelter for the homeless whenever nighttime temperatures are predicted to be 36 degrees or lower, providing men's and women's showers and washing machines. The showers and washing machines are also provided during daytime hours. They have 3 part-time paid staff members to help manage the use of the facility, cooking and overnight shelter.

Their mission is to end hunger and homelessness in Kershaw County.
